The Ohio State Buckeyes may or may not be locked in on a commitment from 5-star Baylor (TN) running back David Gabriel Georges in the coming weeks. Is 5-star Lawrence North (IN) receiver Monshun Sales going to be the next blue-chip addition to the 2027 class?
When looking at the schools in the hunt, there's momentum in some places, uncertainty in others, and one obvious choice.
LSU and Texas are surging
LSU is not at the forefront of this recruiting battle, but Lane Kiffin has everyone on notice after a major surge in June that brought the Tigers into the top 20 nationally in the next cycle. Texas is another school with momentum here, and the Longhorns actually pose a threat. Interestingly enough, the reason is intertwined with LSU.
The Tigers could be flipping 5-star WR Easton Royal and keeping the Louisiana native on the bayou, opening up a need for Texas at receiver. Sales was excited for his OV to Austin in June, and it seemed to have gone well. If Sales chooses the Longhorns, we'll know a Royal flip probably isn't too far behind.
Alabama is not in mix despite Monshun Sales' mom growing up a Tide fan
Somehow, the Crimson Tide aren't much of a factor for Sales despite his mother being from the Yellowhammer State and cheering for Alabama her whole life. Kalen DeBoer has the lowest-ranked 2027 class in this group, and there are legitimate fears about the future in Tuscaloosa.
Sure, there is plenty of talent from the program's past two recruiting classes, but the Tide being so far behind in the post-Nick Saban era is a sign of the times, if there ever was one. You have to wonder if he himself has any interest in Alabama, or if his mom's fandom is driving him to even consider the Crimson Tide. Alabama fans must be asking themselves how they got here.
Indiana makes too much sense for Monshun Sales
Sales has a chance to walk in the footsteps of fellow Lawrence North star receiver Omar Cooper Jr., a first-round pick in the 2026 NFL draft and one of the key members of the 2025/2026 CFP title team in Bloomington. Why wouldn't he?
While Cignetti is a national recruiter, he is a smart coach who understands the importance of pipelines. He'll probably use Cooper to his advantage to make sure he closes the deal on Sales' recruitment.
Cortez Hankton needs to step up 2027 recruiting
Cortez Hankton has had some nice additions to the 2028 and 2029 classes, but OSU's first-year receiving coach would do well to focus on the incoming class next spring. There are only two commits for 2027 so far, and just one blue-chip.
Missing on Sales isn't the end of the world, and most expect the recruits to pour in once the Buckeyes remind everyone who's boss this fall. Still, a hotter start would've been nice to quell any questions about the void left by Brian Hartline's departure to the USF Bulls.
