Ohio State's path forward after likely landing 5-star RB is murky

Ohio State is probably going to land David Gabriel Georges. Who's next after that?

Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day, GM Mark Pantoni, and the powers that be cutting the checks in Columbus look likely to win the historically expensive recruiting battle for 5-star Baylor (TN) running back David Gabriel Georges.

What's next after that, though? Is the well going to run dry after chasing the Tennessee Volunteers and Ole Miss Rebels, the other two finalists for DGG, off with a massive NIL offer? Right now, 1/2 looks like the most favorable outcome for OSU.

Out of the two likeliest next blue-chip recruits in the 2027 class, 4-star Ramsay (AL) defensive tackle Karlos May and 5-star Lawrence North (IN) receiver Monshun Sales, only one still looks undecided. The other is thinking about staying home.

Monshun Sales is probably Indiana-bound

Rivals' Steve Wiltfong and Greg Smith both have Sales staying in the Hoosier State and sticking with Curt Cignetti's championship Indiana program. It's hard to blame an Indianapolis product for hopping on the bandwagon now that the home state's flagship public university is finally a national player on the gridiron.

Sales has the richest programs in the game after him, including the Buckeyes and Texas Longhorns. It's unclear if Ohio State's budget could accommodate Sales, but if anyone's can, it's the Buckeyes. We'll see what Sales decides later this month.

Karlos May has no crystal balls but Georgia is a threat

May has a legitimate chance of choosing OSU. The Buckeyes almost lost May to the Georgia Bulldogs recently, though. UGA nearly had May committing on his official visit in Athens. That's what May said himself, anyway.

“I almost wanted to commit on the spot, actually,” May said. “But I changed my mind. I said I was going to do what I said I would. Go through all my visits. Things like that. But I definitely felt that way.

“Then the next morning, when I woke up, I said this is the place to be. Honestly, I almost did it, but I had to think about it. I had to take all the rest of my visits. It might, you don’t know, it might have been just an emotional thing. Being off emotions or the way I felt about a school, but nah, I still think about Georgia like that. Even a day after I left my visit.”

The Dawgs do few things better than keeping recruits in-region. Of course, practically no one recruits the Birmingham area more vigorously than the Auburn Tigers. The Deep South's Oldest Rivalry counterparts represent the biggest threats to Ohio State.

If this comes down to money, and the Buckeyes are committed enough, they can leave UGA and Auburn in the dust. Ohio State is building momentum for its 2027 class, while the Tigers are holding steady in the same vicinity, and the Bulldogs are underperforming by their barking fanbase's standards. It's been a great run for Georgia for many years, but they may not be built to last as a perennial contender in the NIL era.

There's really no question that the Buckeyes are. We'll see how much that means to May in a few weeks.
