Ohio State Football: Five greatest receivers of all time
By Ryan Stano
Chris Olave was a Michigan killer. His breakout game in his freshman season was against TTUN when he had two catches for 48 yards and two touchdowns. He also blocked a punt that resulted in a touchdown as well. He was doing it all for the Buckeyes in that game.
In his career against TTUN, Olave had 11 catches for 204 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also only got to play them three times because TTUN chickened out in 2020. If he would have played them then, I’m sure he would’ve put up big numbers in that one too.
Olave was just great over the course of his career. In his four years, he finished with 175 catches for 2,702 yards and 35 touchdowns. In fact, he has the record for career receiving touchdowns at Ohio State. 35 is a lot of touchdowns to score in a career.
Olave had 13 touchdowns in 2021 and 12 of them in 2019. If 2020 was a normal season, he would’ve been able to destroy that career touchdown record. Even so, he owns it. He also contributed on special teams, hence that blocked punt I mentioned before.
While he isn’t the person you think of most when you think of “speed” receivers at Ohio State, he’s still pretty darn fast. He ran a 4.39 at the NFL combine in April. That speed made him a constant deep threat, as did his great ability to track the ball.
But the best receiver in Ohio State football history could have been even better had it not been for off-the-field issues.
