Ryan Day might be planting the seeds to pivot from Ohio State QB commit

With the QB commit getting attention from other programs, Ryan Day might be looking at contingency plans.

The Ohio State football program usually only takes one quarterback per recruiting class. Ryan Day likes to bring in just one guy so that the depth chart is full every year. He knows that every year, the backup is just one injury away from having to play. He usually recruits the best quarterbacks in the country.

For the 2027 recruiting class, the Buckeyes have had Brady Edmunds committed for quite a while. He has been locked in for a couple of years. He was an Elite 11 Finalist, showing that he has some talent. Yet, it looks like Day is still looking around for another QB.

Ohio State has shown interest in Trae Taylor, a Nebraska commit. They were also briefly interested in Wonderful Monds IV before he committed to Notre Dame. It looks like Day is planting the seeds of looking for someone to take over Edmunds' spot in the class.

Edmunds is starting to get visits from other schools. For someone who has been committed for as long as he has, that could be a red flag. That could mean that Edmunds is looking elsewhere to play. Perhaps that is why Day is still looking at some other options.

It is unclear at this point who is the driving force of this recruiting activity. Is Day pushing Edmunds out, and that is why he is still visiting other schools? Or is Day looking around at other quarterbacks because Edmunds is now looking around? The Ohio State Buckeyes have to make sure they are prepared either way.

Next season, Julian Sayin will likely be gone. That will leave the door open for Tavien St. Clair to be the starter in 2027 and possibly in 2028. Yet, the Buckeyes are still looking at options in case that doesn't happen. Of course, Edmunds is a very talented quarterback who could push St. Clair for that starting job, if things go well for him.

Ohio State has to figure out if Edmunds really fits into their future plans. Day has a fantastic track record with the quarterback position, so he should get the trust of the fan base.
