Ohio State offensive coordinator pipe dream shut down after latest NFL firing

The Buckeyes have no chance of landing him now.

It seems that the Ohio State football program is running out of options for its vacant offensive coordinator position. All of the collegiate options are gone. Ryan Day seems to be holding out hope that he can get an NFL guy to step down into the college game.

Brian Daboll was one of the first options linked to the Ohio State Buckeyes. Once he was fired as the head coach of the New York Giants, he was seen as a viable option. That firing happened in October. Since then, Daboll has interviewed for multiple other NFL jobs.

That made it very unlikely that Daboll would head to Columbus to coach under Day. Now, with the Buffalo Bills making the decision to fire Sean McDermott, there is no chance that Daboll heads to Ohio State. The Buckeyes are going to have to hire someone else.

Daboll has already been linked to the vacant head coaching job for the Bills. Even if he doesn't end up getting the head coaching job, he would be an excellent candidate for the offensive coordinator job in Buffalo. Regardless, it's bad news for the Buckeyes moving forward.

With Daboll crossed off the list, Day is running short on candidates. J.T. Barrett is a possibility, but he has never called plays before. A lot of the young offensive-minded coaches are getting head coaching interviews in the NFL. Why would they want to come to college football and have to deal with recruiting?

As time goes on, the odds of Day promoting Kennan Bailey to OC are increasingly likely. Day would likely call plays in that scenario, which would be a terrible move. Day has had over a month to fill this vacancy, and it's not like they have been game-planning for additional CFP games.

This is the last massive piece of business that the Buckeyes have to figure out this offseason. Day is under pressure to nail this hire heading into Julian Sayin's second year as a starter.
