Ohio State landing 5-star Christopher Vargas would give Ryan Day a borderline unfair start to 2028

All signs are pointing to the Buckeyes getting this done.

While Ohio State and Ryan Day may have people fired up with fall camp here, everyone continues to be reminded that recruiting never sleeps. And come Aug. 8, 5-star quarterback Christopher Vargas is getting ready to shut down his process, with countless schools hoping that he'll deliver them with some good news.

All signs are pointing to the Buckeyes getting said good news, as multiple predictions have arrived in Day's favor on both On3 and 247Sports. Should that happen, Vargas would join 5-star wide receiver Jett Harrison, 5-star pass-rusher Jameer Whyce, and 4-star running back Elijah Newman-Hall. So, three of Day's first four pledges for '28 would be 5-star talents? Goodness.

Ohio State is hoping 5-star QB Christopher Vargas commits to the Buckeyes

As fantastic as the 2027 class is looking for Day, with 19 pledges on board, might Ohio State be ready to push for the No. 1 '28 haul next year? Obviously, things are still pretty early here, but bringing in so much elite talent this fast sure sets the foundation for Day to remind Mike Elko, Mario Cristobal, and other coaches that he's still got his fastball.

For now, we must wait and see what Vargas decides, but again, it sure looks like the Buckeyes are in a fantastic spot to pull this off. It'd be a monster get too, as the 6-4, 195-pounder is ranked the No. 1 quarterback in the nation, No. 1 player out of Massachusetts, and No. 6 prospect nationally overall. He's got college stud written all over him, with his future potentially being in Columbus.

Vargas has picked up 20 offers, with Ohio State, Oregon, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, and others putting a scholarship on the table. Of late, the Buckeyes and Ducks have been the ones showing him the most recruiting love. Day would love nothing more than to post a proverbial haymaker on Dan Lanning, but we won't know for sure until Vargas reveals where he's headed.

The idea of Vargas throwing the ball to Harrison at The Shoe down the road is exciting, as those two would be quite the duo. Don't forget that fellow 5-star receiver Braylon Clark is also receiving a ton of interest from the Buckeyes, with multiple predictions for Ohio State also coming in. Might Clark be on commit watch following Vargas' decision? That could be in the cards too.

That's something to think about later, but it all adds up to Day and his staff working wonders in going after 2028 targets. Vargas is expected to be the next commit to join in on the Ohio State fun, and while nothing will be locked in until his announcement, Buckeyes fans have every reason to be feeling pretty confident right now.
