In December of last year, Ohio State shocked the rest of the college football world by landing a commitment from DJ Jacobs. Jacobs is a five-star edge recruit who is listed as the third-best player overall in the country. He is the crown jewel of Ohio State's 2027 recruiting class.
Despite staying locked in with the Buckeyes, that hasn't stopped Miami fans from trying to convince him to flip. Jacobs is one of the most sought-after players in the country, so it's not shocking that the Hurricanes are trying to flip them. The Buckeyes aren't worried, even after the latest intel that came out.
Miami is still trying to flip DJ Jacobs from Ohio State
There is some chatter that the Hurricanes are budgeting themselves in terms of NIL to be able to add Jacobs to the 2027 class. In other words, they're going to try to throw as much money at him as possible and hope that he ends up choosing the money now instead of when he becomes a pro.
Of course, Jacobs continues to stay silent on the matter. As far as anyone in Columbus is concerned, he is still committed to the Ohio State football program. He even made a surprise visit in June to try to recruit some other players to join him in Columbus. Is that the behavior of someone who would flip?
Jacobs is a very talented player, so Miami is going to stay on him until December. They tried the same thing with Jeremiah Smith for his entire career, and that didn't work. Some players simply can't be bought. Jacobs knows what kind of development and coaching he would get from Larry Johnson.
Johnson is still one of the best defensive line coaches in the game. He has been developing first-round picks at Ohio State for the better part of two decades. Jacobs is well aware of the legacy that Johnson has forged in his time coaching under both Ryan Day and Urban Meyer.
Ohio State needs to do whatever it can to hold onto DJ Jacobs
Keeping Jacobs should be the top priority for Day and his staff for the rest of this recruiting cycle. Losing him would be a massive blow to the 2027 recruiting class, and the class needs a lot of help in order to finish in the top five. That is a problem in its own right.
Day might be leaning more toward replenishing his program via the Transfer Portal. He also might be biding his time until the new Save College Sports Act is approved. Whatever the case may be, Jacobs is one recruit that he can't let slip through his fingers. He needs to make sure Jacobs is getting plenty of attention.
Ohio State has done a better job with spending NIL money this cycle. However, as we saw with the recruitment of David Gabriel Georges, they won't be spending a stupid amount of money on any recruit. They have principles that they are sticking to.
