The Ohio State football program might soon be landing a commitment for an elite quarterback.

In the 2027 recruiting class, the Ohio State football team has Brady Edmunds committed to them at the moment. Edmunds has been committed to the Ohio State Buckeyes since 2024. Yet, there are questions about whether or not he will stick to that commitment.

Edmunds has been linked to possibly flipping to UCLA. If he does do that, the Buckeyes would be without a quarterback in this class. That would likely lead Ryan Day to look to the Transfer Portal at the end of the season to get some quarterback depth.

Despite that issue, Day has already turned his attention to the 2028 recruiting class at the quarterback position. He has already established who he is targeting, and that is Christopher Vargas, a five-star recruit. It sounds like the Buckeyes are in the lead for his services.

Ohio State football program in the lead for 5-star 2028 QB Christopher Vargas

According to Steve Wiltfong of Rivals, the Buckeyes have taken the clear and early lead for Vargas.

"He loved working with the coaches, and certainly the background and track record of prolific quarterback play. Offensive, championship-caliber level football, and not only where these quarterbacks fall in the NFL Draft, but the readiness they have to play at the next level on day one. So Ohio State is setting the tone early in the process for Christopher Vargas."

Adding Vargas to the roster would really give the Buckeyes a pipeline of solid quarterbacks moving forward. Tavien St. Clair will likely be the starting quarterback for the Buckeyes next season once Julian Sayin heads for the NFL. They need someone to start once St. Clair leaves.

If Vargas is as good as he looks right now in high school, he certainly has a chance to start once he gets to campus. He stands at 6'4 and 180 pounds, so he needs to put on some weight. Still, his ability to push the ball down the field and fit it in tight windows is very enticing to him.

Ohio State could land a commitment from Vargas if things keep going well

As Wiltfong noted, the Buckeyes have already had Vargas on campus multiple times. They like what they have seen from him, and he clearly likes what he has seen from the coaching staff and his visits on campus. There is a chance that the Buckeyes could land a commitment from him if things keep going well.

Of course, the 2028 recruiting class is still quite far away. Even if the Buckeyes do land a commitment from him soon, it would be a long time to hold it. That's what they are dealing with regarding Jett Harrison right now, as he has committed in the same class. Having Vargas throw him passes would be nice.

The Buckeyes feel good about where they sit for Vargas. Time will tell if this early lead will lead to a commitment or if another program swoops in with a massive NIL offer for him to pick somewhere else.
