The Ohio State football program has been very focused on elevating its 2027 recruiting class. At the end of June, they added some really strong talent, including five-star defensive lineman Marcus Fakatou. He becomes the latest five-star player to join the 2027 class.
While the Buckeyes are looking to add new talent to the class, they still have some business to tend to with current commits. Namely, Brady Edmunds. Edmunds is a four-star quarterback recruit who has been committed to the Ohio State Buckeyes since December of 2024.
Early in 2026, Ryan Day started looking around at other quarterbacks, signaling that he was not all-in with Edmunds as the QB recruit in this class. Edmunds even took an official visit to UCLA in recent weeks. Now, it looks like he will be making a definitive decision on his future soon.
Ohio State commit Brady Edmunds to make definitive college decision next week
According to Rivals' Greg Biggins, Edmunds will be making his final decision next week. It has come down to the Buckeyes and the Bruins for his services. It's pretty clear that UCLA has decided they want him pretty badly, a sentiment that Ohio State hasn't shown in recent weeks.
Still, Edmunds visited Columbus in the middle of June, just a couple of weeks after heading to LA to visit the Bruins. Things seemed to go well on that visit. Perhaps Day talked with Edmunds and explained his actions a little bit. Edmunds really wants to be a Buckeye, though.
Edmunds has made it very clear that he grew up cheering for Ohio State and would cherish the opportunity to play for the Scarlet and Gray. However, he understands that it's a two-way street. He needs to feel wanted in Columbus, and he wants a clear path to playing time.
Ohio State could be left without a 2027 quarterback
If Edmunds does decide to flip to UCLA, the Buckeyes could be left without a quarterback in the 2027 recruiting class. At this point, it might be too late for them to flip a QB from another program. Day might be stuck grabbing a QB from the Transfer Portal when the season ends.
Edmunds likely wouldn't have a path to playing time anytime soon. Tavien St. Clair is likely going to start for the next couple of years once Julian Sayin is done with this year. St. Clair looked good enough in the Spring Game to justify that decision, too.
Day has always said he likes to take at least one quarterback per recruiting class. Keeping Edmunds would be the ultimate goal for him if he can't find someone else to take. It doesn't seem like he will, so having Edmunds provide some depth over the next couple of seasons is preferable to him over nothing.
It looks like Day and his staff will have a resolution about this issue pretty soon. Then, Day can move on with the appropriate action. For what it's worth, I believe it makes sense to hold on to Edmunds. He's a solid player.
