The Ohio State football program has slowly been making its way through the Transfer Portal. This year has seen more Buckeyes enter the portal than in years past, meaning there are now more holes in the roster that need to be filled. So far, the Buckeyes have filled just three roster spots.
On Tuesday, the Ohio State Buckeyes hosted elite defensive end Chaz Coleman. Coleman was a five-star recruit in the 2025 recruiting class who ultimately ended up picking Penn State. He had Ohio State in his final two schools, but decided to play for James Franklin.
With Franklin fired and now at Virginia Tech, Coleman entered the portal, with Ohio State as the immediate favorite to land him. After a visit came and went from Coleman on Tuesday, the Buckeyes might have squandered their opportunity to land him.
The Ohio State football team may have lost out on Chaz Coleman
Usually, players from the Transfer Portal commit either on their visit or directly after. Coleman has not given any indication of what he is going to do, so that means that the Buckeyes may have squandered their chances of signing him to the roster for next season.
It's pretty clear that Coleman is shopping around and seeing who is willing to give him the most NIL money. As a freshman, Coleman wasn't very productive, only getting one sack. He has all of the traits of an elite player, but he doesn't have the production to match.
Perhaps that's why the Buckeyes are a little scared of giving him a ton of money to play for them. Still, the defensive line is a position of need. Even with the addition of John Walker, the Buckeyes need some guys on the edge to replace the production that they will lose heading into 2026.
Ohio State is certainly not out of it for Coleman, but they seem to have lost their advantage. If they are able to land a commitment from him, expect an announcement sometime in the next 24 hours.
