The Ohio State football program has been a little slow to add players in the Transfer Portal. Despite the fact that they are no longer playing in the College Football Playoff, they haven't had a lot of urgency when it comes to adding players from the portal.
Until Tuesday morning, the Ohio State Buckeyes had only added two players from the portal. They had added a tight end and a long snapper. Other than that, they were scheduling visits for some players as players from their own roster continue to enter the Transfer Portal.
On Tuesday morning, the Buckeyes finally added a piece in the trenches. The Buckeyes have added defensive tackle John Walker to the roster from the Transfer Portal. Walker will have two years of eligibility remaining when he gets to Columbus.
The Ohio State football team adds defensive tackle John Walker
Walker, a defensive tackle from UCF, was recruited by the Buckeyes out of high school. He even made an official visit to Columbus during his recruitment. He ultimately picked UCF after the Buckeyes lost interest, but now they want him after he put up two productive seasons with the Golden Knights.
While Walker is not much of a pass-rusher, he is someone who can clog up the middle and make it hard for teams to run the ball right up the gut. That's something that Ohio State needs with the depth they are losing up front. Walker won't start, but he can be rotated in.
Walker is the first player of some consequence that Ohio State has added from the portal. He isn't the only defensive lineman that the Buckeyes are hoping to be able to add on Tuesday, but he is still someone who can help them win games next season.
Ryan Day should be getting a bit more active in the portal over the next few days. Walker is just the first player that fans will be excited about.
