The Ohio State football program makes sure they have everything running smoothly with the athletic department. They have only had two athletic directors in the last couple of decades. That stability is what other programs should strive for. Neither athletic director has had any scandals.
For TTUN, the same cannot be said. Warde Manuel has had a massive issue in his tenure. He oversaw the largest cheating scandal in modern college football history, hired a basketball coach who hit another team's coach, and allegedly hid the affair of the football coach he hired after the cheater left, which was with another staffer.
Michigan hired an outside firm to investigate the culture of the athletic director. Now, it seems that the findings of that investigation are too bad, even for a program like TTUN. Manuel is now going to leave the program at the end of the calendar year, according to multiple sources.
TTUN is in shambles with the athletic department after findings of investigation
Right now, TTUN has an interim president after Santa Ono tried to leave to become Florida's president, but that vote didn't go through. They didn't want the stench of his scandals affecting their program. But their interim president couldn't even swallow the findings.
And yet, Michigan is still trying to hide things. They refuse to release the findings of the investigation, presumably because things were so heinous that they didn't want to get in trouble with the NCAA. Yet, they claim that the athletic program did not have widespread corruption.
Michigan only cares about finding any way possible to win games while circumventing the rules. That seems pretty clear at this point, and not having transparency with the public is an issue. The Ohio State Buckeyes have had some issues with that when it comes to the Richard Strauss scandal, but at least they are trying to make that right with the victims.
How Warde Manuel being ousted affects Ohio State
With Manuel gone, the Buckeyes will likely maintain supremacy in the best rivalry in sports over TTUN. Kyle Whittingham is a stop-gap coach who won't be there for the long-term. Ohio State is too good, and their culture is too strong for them to lose too many games to TTUN.
The Buckeyes are happy with what they have been able to do with their athletics. With Manuel ousted, they no longer have to worry about cheating being rampant throughout the athletic department. That's especially true in the football program. The Buckeyes have to be pleased with that.
This issue for TTUN is one that will continue to follow them until Manuel actually is gone at the end of 2026. He gave TTUN a lot of success on the playing field because he was willing to overlook the rules. That issue is something that Michigan looks like they want to fix finally.
Ohio State, on the other hand, will continue to do things above board. Ross Bjork might have some issues, but at least he's ethical.
