This, really, is what it's all about. Ohio State wideout Jeremiah Smith has already accomplished what so many others never will be able to, winning a national title with the Buckeyes and Ryan Day during his incredible freshman season. Now that he's getting ready for this junior year, he's got another natty on his mind, but he'll be taking the field as a team captain.
It was recently announced that Smith has received that honor, only adding to his fantastic legacy thus far in Columbus. So, what did his teammates naming him a captain mean to the electric wideout? As it turns out, more than any of us could have imagined.

Come on, that's just awesome right there. Smith was overcome with emotion, crying some tears of joy after finding out this good news. This tells us all what we already knew: that Smith has an incredible amount of love for Ohio State and that's never going to change.
What makes Smith so easy to root for too is that while he is easily one of the best players in all of college football, he's still got a humble side to him. On top of that, his loyalty to the program is something that's never going to be forgotten.
Multiple times over the past two offseasons, rumors flew that Smith was going to potentially enter the transfer portal to suit up for a different team. We don't have to tell you that he was linked to Miami on several occasions, which Smith indirectly confirmed too. However, he made it more than clear that he was never going to leave OSU, and that no amount of money was going to get him to change his mind.
Last season, Smith was once again a total force for the Ohio State offense, posting 87 receptions for 1,243 yards and 12 touchdowns. Despite his incredible campaign, the Buckeyes weren't able to go back-to-back, losing to Miami in the College Football Playoff, which came after losing to Indiana in the Big Ten title game.
Those two losses stung for Smith and Ohio State as a whole, but it provided the Buckeyes with extra motivation to silence the haters in 2026. Smith, who is headed to the NFL after this season, wants to make sure he ends his time on campus the right way. And he'll be doing so as a team captain, which understandably means the world to him.
