Illinois head coach Bret Bielema is always good for an honest soundbite. Few in the sport are as straightforward while speaking about his football team or the Fighting Illini's opponents.
You're not getting coach-speak from Bielema. It's hard not to appreciate him for that.
Ahead of a Week 4 showdown with Ohio State at the "Shoe," Bielema shared the harsh reality of playing a program like the Buckeyes while facing a massive financial disparity.
“If I’m within two million [dollars] of Ohio State, Oregon and Penn State and Michigan, I’m good,” Bielema said in the buildup to the Big Noon Kickoff clash on FOX. “Just let me go. When I’m within 25 million [dollars], I’m not so good, right?”
By many estimates, Bielema's program may not even be within $25 million of The Ohio State University's NIL spend.
Illinois, unlike Ohio State, invests heavily in its basketball program. The Fighting Illini football team has had one 10-win regular season in the last 25 years. Illinois has sent 15 players to the NFL Draft since 2020. OSU has had 61 players drafted in that same time frame.
These two programs may as well be playing a different game altogether.

Most have the Buckeyes favored by four scores on Saturday. A bloodbath is expected in Columbus this Saturday afternoon.
After a loss to Texas and two unsatisfying wins over Ball State and Kent State, the Illini may be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Frankly, it sounds as though Bielema knows what's coming. He acknowledged that his program's losses of quarterback Luke Altmyer and linebacker Gabe Jacas are big ones.
The talent level has fallen off significantly in Champaign over the last year on the gridiron. Illinois simply can't keep up with the spending of other Big Ten titans.
Ohio State fans can be disappointed again if Illinois makes it a fight
There is a possibility that Bielema's team comes out hungry to prove it's not a doormat against the mighty Ohio State University.
If this game is even within two touchdowns, the Scarlet and Gray faithful may lose it. Anxiety has riddled the program since losing to the Longhorns after leading by 20 points in the fourth quarter. The slightest bit of a scare from the Illini would send this fanbase over the edge.
Iowa, Indiana, and USC await on the other side in October. All of those games are on the road. The heat is about to be turned all the way up in Central Ohio.
Illinois is supposed to be a tune-up on this schedule. If it becomes a back-and-forth affair, Ryan Day will not be forgiven. He'll have more doubters than ever. With two NFL offensive coordinators, his program is supposed to look dominant in every facet.
Imagine having more than double the budget but being competitive with the Illini? Bielema would be overjoyed postgame to talk about it, but Buckeye fans would be in a full-blown panic.
