This season has been a nightmare for the Ohio State football program. What started as a year with a lot of promise has evaporated into despair. After being the top-ranked team in the country, the Buckeyes are now 6-5 in their last 11 games dating back to last year.
Ohio State isn't the only program that is having a horrendous season. TTUN is also struggling with a new head coach. Kyle Whittingham has struggled to get the Wolverines to have a competent offense. That continues to be the case. So which program has had a sadder season?
Ohio State is bad, but at least they aren't Michigan
The Buckeyes have had a terrible last two weeks, getting blown out in games against USC and Oregon. Playing without Julian Sayin has clearly been an issue. The offense has no way to push the ball down the field, and the defense can't stop hemorrhaging points.
However, things could be worse. They could have overpaid a five-star quarterback to flip his commitment, only to ruin him and bench him. That's what TTUN has done with Bryce Underwood. TTUN turned the ball over four times against Michigan State, showing no life on offense.
Michigan fans are starting to call Kyle Whittingham an Urban Meyer plant, especially after he said there are no more trophy games to care about after losing to MSU. He doesn't seem to understand the gravity of The Game, even though both teams are struggling.
All that's left for the Ohio State Buckeyes is to beat TTUN at home. If Ryan Day loses that game, things could get very ugly for him. Ohio State already has more losses than it has accumulated in any season going back to 2011. A loss to the Wolverines would have fans ready to run him out of town.
Ohio State vs. Michigan will be the battle of the Mid
Neither the Buckeyes nor the Wolverines are any good. Quite frankly, the game at the end of November will be a battle of middling teams. Neither team has any postseason goal that they can accomplish. At this point, it's a one-game season for both programs.
Ohio State at least has some talent on the roster. That should be good enough for them to beat what might be the worst offensive Michigan team I've ever seen. A loss to this Michigan team would be an absolute catastrophe. Even so, this is not what Buckeye fans are used to at this point in the season.
Fans are used to this team gearing up to play their best football in preparation for a chance to win a national championship. Instead, Ohio State looks like they have very little fight in it, especially on the defensive side of the ball. At least they can score points, which TTUN can't.
Both Ryan Day and Whittingham are facing criticism from their fan bases. At this point, only one of them is in danger of losing their job. If Day doesn't beat Whittingham, though, he could be sent packing as well.
