Ohio State hasn't lost three games in a season since the Luke Fickell season in 2011. Ryan Day is the man who is now in charge of the program that has that distinction. After getting crushed 41-28 at home by Oregon, the Buckeyes have no chance to make the College Football Playoff.
Essentially, the season is over. The only thing left that Ohio State can accomplish now is beating TTUN. Still, that shouldn't be acceptable to anyone within the program. Coaching changes need to happen. Three coaches need to be jettisoned out of Columbus.
1. Arthur Smith
Bringing in Arthur Smith to take over the offensive coordinator and the play-calling this season has been a complete disaster. He has yet to establish any sort of rhythm, even when Julian Sayin was healthy. Sayin's absence has clearly been felt over the last two weeks.
Without Sayin, Smith has failed to scheme things up that could help Luke Fahey be better. Fahey has been put in a bad spot in each of the last couple of games. Smith was supposed to be a guru scheming up the run plays, especially since that's what he did in the NFL.
Instead, the running game has been horrendous. Before taking on Oregon, Ohio State ranked 64th in rushing offense. The Buckeyes ran for just 53 yards against the Ducks on 21 carries. It was a terrible performance from everyone involved in the running game. Smith has to go.
2. Tyler Bowen
The offensive line has been poor this year. Scheming stuff up will work if the players up front are able to do the right things. Ohio State hasn't done a good job of opening up holes for running backs to get through, no matter who has been getting the carries.
Poro pass protection is the reason that Ohio State has to play a backup quarterback in the first place. Phillip Daniels is the reason that Sayin ended up fracturing his elbow. Had that not happened, perhaps Ohio State wouldn't have gotten beaten in each of the last two weeks.
Bowen hasn't developed the linemen at all this year. He also hasn't done a good job recruiting. The combination of those hasn't done wonders for the offense. This hire has not gone well, and his time in Columbus should be over.
3. Matt Patricia
I was skeptical of the hiring of Patricia from the beginning. However, he got the defense to become the best unit in the country last year. As we get further away from that roster, it seems clear that it was the roster that was the big reason for those impressive numbers, not Patricia.
Patricia's defense has now allowed 71 points in each of the last two weeks. If that's what he is going to do without some of the best defensive players that Ohio State has had in recent memory, the Buckeyes need someone new. Send him back to the NFL.
If Ryan Day isn't willing to make these changes, then perhaps Ross Bjork needs to look at making a head coaching change, as well.
