Former Ohio State football players built this program, and they are not pleased with Ryan Day.
After a second consecutive embarrassing loss, the Buckeyes will now have no shot of making the College Football Playoff. They would need a miracle for that to happen. The only thing they have left to play for is to beat TTUN. That's not even a guarantee at this point.
Losing 41-28 to the Ducks was perhaps the worst possible way to have the season end. Former Ohio State Buckeyes are not happy with the state of the program. Several of them took to social media to take Ryan Day and his coaching staff to task.
Former Ohio State football players bury Ryan Day after brutal loss
Some of the social media messages from former players really show how much things have gone off the rails this season.
This team looks broken. Something has to change immediately

Can’t allow a team to come in the shoe and be the bully that’s unacceptable and for sure not the culture

The worst part of OSU having their worst season since before I played there, is that Jeremiah probably isn’t gonna win the Heisman now. I hate that for him.

Perhaps the biggest critic of what has happened is former Ohio State national champion receiver Michael Thomas. He had several tweets that underscore the frustrations of what fans are feeling all across the country, especially after the expectations that the team had in the preseason.

We don’t sign up at Ohio State to lose back to back like that

Day has already started to get the fans riled up at him after what has happened this year. Now, it seems he is starting to lose some of the alumni. That's not a good spot to be in, especially after he has led Ohio State to its first three-loss season since 2011.
It's abundantly clear at this point that Ohio State has not made good decisions when it comes to assistant coaching hires. The Arthur Smith experiment has not worked. Matt Patricia looks broken without Caleb Downs, Sonny Styles, and Arvell Reese on his team.
Changes need to be coming to the team, and it seems like the former players who played before Day got to Columbus are calling for those changes. It's unacceptable that th e program has fallen to the point that losing three games in a single year is even an option.
Ohio State has to move forward in a different direction
It's unclear what the Buckeyes need to do differently to get back to the top of college football. At the very least, some assistant coaches need to be sent packing. Day might have worn out his welcome just a couple of years removed from winning a national championship, as well.
I'm not ready to go that far yet. Winning a national title is not easy, and only a few coaches in the history of the sport have been able to accomplish that. However, that could change if the Buckeyes don't turn things around for the rest of the year. Specifically, beating the Wolverines.
A loss at home to TTUN would set off a firestorm that could be worse than what happened in 2024. It might even be bad enough to end up getting Day to go elsewhere. That's not something that Day wants to deal with. At this point, beating his rival is the only thing he has left to coach for.
