How many times is Gus Johnson going to get away with this? Johnson, a fantastic play-by-play commentator 95 percent of the time, continues to let Ohio State fans down with some of his calls. More of the same was showcased in the Week 3 win over Kent State, taking some excitement away from what was a major moment for freshman Chris Henry Jr.
Sure, this was a blowout win against Kent State and Henry's 75-yard touchdown came in the fourth quarter... but Gus had to be kidding with how he handled this play. Take a listen to the video below and you'll see exactly why. Johnson sounds like he's watching a chess or checkers match, not one of the top teams in the country:

Chris Henry Jr. deserved more than Gus Johnson's pathetic call for his 75-yard Ohio State TD
Show us some dang emotion, Mr. Johnson. Seriously, no one was expecting Johnson to have the same reaction to Omar Cooper Jr.'s game-winning TD for Indiana against Penn State or anything, but some excitement sure would have been nice. Oh, and he also mistakenly said it was Henry's first Ohio State TD - it was his second.
Henry was fired up after that long touchdown grab and so were fans in the stands for him. The true freshman wideout has MONSTER expectations for this team moving forward and everyone is getting a close look at his potential. He's only going to keep getting better and once Jeremiah Smith leaves for the NFL next season - he'll have what it takes to be a leader for this offense.
With Big Ten play here too, the hope is that he'll keep getting more comfortable with the offense and help Julian Sayin and Co., which countless people have been expecting from him since he signed with the Buckeyes. He's the real deal, no doubt.
As for Johnson, this of course isn't the first time he's left the Ohio State faithful fully disappointed. What's worse is that he previously said he loved calling the Michigan vs. Ohio State games when the Wolverines posted their four-game winning streak over the Buckeyes. There's clearly a bit of a rooting interest there for the Detroit native, and plenty of people are sick of it.
It just feels like Johnson is a bit more amped up to call games when the Buckeyes aren't the ones on the field turning heads in the middle of the action. If that's going to continue forward, then FOX should find someone else to be on the mic when Ohio State is front and center. Otherwise, OSU supporters will continue to be left shaking their heads and feel wanting more with his vanilla reactions to what's supposed to be something that's downright electric. Pick it up, man.
