Ohio State essentially watched its season end after a soul-crushing loss to Oregon. They fell 41-28 a week after allowing 30 points against USC. At this point, the Buckeyes don't have much to play for. The only thing they can do is beat TTUN, and that looks like a giant question mark right now.
After the game, Ryan Day looked like he had no answers. Not only that, but he had a horrendous message to his team after getting their butts kicked the entirety of the contest.
Ryan Day's message after losing to Oregon is soft and infuriating
During his postgame press conference, Day told reporters that he wishes that he had been less aggressive at the end of the first half and run the ball instead. Being less aggressive is not the answer! Turtling and being conservative is not the right thing to do! This is sending a message that he doesn't trust his team. The Buckeyes are not ready for this.
It's very clear that the head coach did not have his guys prepared to play any games without Julian Sayin. What's worse is that he doesn't seem to have any way of getting his guys to help out the new quarterback. His defense continues to do confounding things.
Every series, Matt Patricia insists on dropping seven or eight in coverage and not putting any pressure on the quarterback. The Buckeyes have let quarterbacks in the last two weeks set up a picnic in the pocket. When they did blitz, they were able to at least push the pocket a little bit.
Day also refuses to switch quarterbacks for some reason. Luke Fahey ended up throwing for 360 yards, but most of that was in garbage time. He threw one of the worst interceptions possible in the first half, lofting one up into triple coverage. He also refused to throw it to Jeremiah Smith.
Changes need to be made across the board with the Ohio State football program
Ohio State clearly cannot let things go on the way they are now. There are several embarrassing stats that have been floating around after this loss, including the fact that it's the first time Ohio State has lost two games in a row in 15 years. Ohio State won't make the College Football Playoff this year, either.
It's infuriating that Day doesn't seem to understand the gravity of the collapse that his team has had this year. They were the preseason number-one team in both preseason polls! Yet, they are not going to get a chance to play for a national championship. That's unacceptable.
Several changes need to occur within the program. Coaches need to be let go. If Day isn't careful, he could find himself out the door, as well. It's no guarantee that the Buckeyes will win any of their remaining games. Based on what we've seen the past two weeks, why would that be a certainty?
If he loses at home to TTUN again, Day should be shown the door. Plain and simple. As it stands now, several assistant coaches should get pink slips.
