Last season, the Ohio State football team crushed Bryce Underwood and TTUN last season. It was a 27-9 blowout that wasn't close at any point in the final three quarters. Quite frankly, the Buckeyes had Michigan in a blender when it comes to them running their offense.
In that game, Underwood finished just 8-18 for 63 yards and an interception. It was by far the worst game of his young career. He was struggling to see what Ohio State was doing to him. Michigan fans continue to think that Underwood will be fine and that he is the best quarterback prospect ever.
One former NFL safety doesn't see it that way. Eric Weddle played 14 seasons at the professional level, retiring in 2021. He has a much different thought on what Underwood is. He actually thinks that he could get benched very early on in the upcoming season.
Eric Weddle gives Ohio State fans joy by saying Bryce Underwood could get benched
While appearing on the Zero by Sixty Podcast, Weddle says that he wouldn't be surprised if Underwood got benched early on in the 2026 season by new coach Kyle Whittingham.
"Mark my words. I was out there for spring ball. Don't be surprised if the backups are playing early, because that Underwood kid, I don't think he can throw or play quarterback."
That's a pretty bold statement for Weddle to make about Underwood. Underwood was the number one overall recruit in the 2025 recruiting class. He was the top-rated quarterback, ranked just ahead of Tavien St. Clair. Based on Weddle's assessment, it seems like St. Clair is going to have the last laugh.
Weddle was a really good safety in his day, making five NFL All-Pro teams over the course of his long career. He knows what it looks like when a quarterback can spin it. If he thinks that Underwood is going to have issues this season, that's bad news for Michigan fans.
Ohio State fans could have the last laugh in the Tavien St. Clair vs. Bryce Underwood
If Underwood turns out to be a bust, St. Clair could turn out to be the best quarterback in the 2025 class. Of course, St. Clair won't start until 2027 at the earliest. However, if Underwood were to get benched this season, it's highly unlikely he would be able to play another snap for TTUN.
Fans of the Ohio State Buckeyes would love to see that happen. The smack talk that would happen between Buckeye fans and Michigan fans would be epic. Though it might be better if Underwood actually plays in late November in the Shoe. That would give Ohio State a better chance to win that game.
It would be surprising if Underwood were to start riding the pine. Whittingham will likely give him a chance to play through his mistakes. However, if things get bad enough late in the year, there is a chance that the Wolverines try to play another QB instead of watching Underwood flounder.
