Before ever becoming the starting quarterback for Michigan, Bryce Underwood had some bold comments about the Ohio State football program. He came into his freshman season talking a lot of trash, claiming that it was over for Ohio State once he set foot on campus.
After getting smashed in Ann Arbor by the Buckeyes last season, some would think that Underwood would preach a little humility with the rivalry. Instead, Underwood has decided to double down on all of his comments regarding the Ohio State Buckeyes and his own talents.
Bryce Underwood says he doesn't regret comments about the Buckeyes
When asked if Underwood regrets anything at Big Ten Media Day, Underwood made it clear that he stands by his comments.
“No. I don’t regret nothing I said.”
That's certainly a bold way to go about things, considering he threw for just 63 yards against the Buckeyes in a home game. Ohio State made it clear that they knew all they had to do was force Underwood to throw, and they would win that game. They didn't respect him as a passer.
Despite his poor play against his rival, Underwood isn't taking anything back that he said. That is certainly a bold claim, considering his poor play likely got his coach fired. Now, Underwood is under an enormous amount of pressure to perform as a sophomore.
With how bad Underwood has looked in the spring, it's fair to wonder if he will even be the starting quarterback for the Wolverines when they travel to Columbus in November. Ohio State fans are desperately hoping that he is, because he looks like a major bust.
As a true freshman, Underwood threw for just 2,428 yards, 11 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. That means he averaged under a touchdown per game as the starting quarterback of a Big Ten program. Ohio State couldn't have asked for him to play any worse.
Ohio State has already made Bryce Underwood look foolish
Going 8-18 for 63 yards and a touchdown made Underwood's comments look pretty foolish already. Doubling down on those comments put Underwood in a precarious position with a new coaching staff in place. If he fails to deliver this season, he could find himself on the bench.
In contrast, Ohio State has an excellent quarterback they can get behind. Julian Sayin enters this season as one of the best quarterbacks in the entire country. With him being a Heisman Finalist a year ago, he should only be better in his second year as a starter.
Buckeye fans would love nothing more than for Underwood to be a massive bust. Tavien St. Clair was the number two quarterback recruit in the 2025 recruiting class, and he will likely start next season. He could end up being the best quarterback to come out of that class if Underwood flames out.
Underwood has a few months to prepare for a hostile environment in the Shoe. I can't help but think he's not going to be ready for whatever he encounters in late November.
