Breaking down Buckeyes' big recruiting weekend from their bye week

From landing Jeremiah Smith's younger brother to hosting a recruit this weekend at Washington, here's a look at how Day and Co. spent the time off.

Flipping the script

It wouldn't be a complete recruitment weekend without Day and the boys trying to flip some recruits, either. And what a weekend for that it was. So much so, in fact, that it's hard to pinpoint the biggest news of them all, from trying to steal a fellow Midwesterner from the claws of the SEC to a downright petty move by Ohio State -- in a good way.

It seems like the Buckeyes are addicted to 6-5 kids, and that's no different with tight end Mack Sutter, the top recruit out of the state of Illinois, to many.

As we reported earlier this week, Ryan Day and his team are trying to flip the Alabama commit to come to Columbus. Hudson Standish of 247Sports has high praise for Sutter, noting "immense production on both sides of the ball" for the 230-pounder, "who can create effortless separation before the catch and climb the ladder at the catch point."

An in-state offensive lineman, Landry Brede, of Mentor, is seeing time from Buckeyes recruiters, as they try to sway him from his current commitment to N.C. State. He's a sizable kid, standing at, you guessed it, 6-5, and tipping the scales at 280 pounds.

He is a 3-star whose first offer came from Miami of Ohio back in 2023 before taking an unofficial visit to Columbus. Since then, he's taken visits and fielded offers from other schools, with a lot of MACtion along the way, with Toledo, Bowling Green, Western Michigan, and Buffalo all offering the Cardinal lineman.

Another in-state offer came in this week, with Massillon Washington's Ja'Dyn Williams getting his offer from the Buckeyes. Currently a Hoosier commit, the Tiger senior is a leader on the defense, grabbing 29 tackles through the two games with statistics listed on Washington's MaxPreps. He "liked what he saw" when he attended Ohio State's game against Ohio earlier this season, according to Bucknuts' Tom Loy.

Maryland landed an in-state recruit in cornerback Khmari Bing, but if the Buckeyes have anything to say about the 3-star DB, he will end up in Columbus. He will be visiting The Shoe on October 4th, he announced via X, when Ohio State hosts Minnesota. The 6-foot senior received his offer from Ohio State on September 16th.

And, in probably the pettiest move of the weekend, Ryan Day played chess, not checkers. Rahsjon Duncan has been committed to the Washington Huskies -- Ohio State's opponent this weekend -- for months now. Day offered the 6-1, 175-pound corner out of Oakland, California, this week, who will be in town for the showdown for Ohio State's first road trip of the year.

Brotherly love

Finally, some of the biggest news of the week: Jeremiah Smith's little brother, Angelo, announced his commitment to follow in his brother's footsteps to play for the Buckeyes.

Praise poured in for Ohio State on Sunday as the news broke for the 3-star safety, with older brother Jeremiah quote-tweeting a post from Hayes Fawcett, adding just the '100' emoji to it, and Angelo himself tweeting out "#blessed" with some acorn emojis following.

Although slightly undersized at 5-8, 160 pounds, he's a highly-touted recruit looking to make a name for himself, not just living in his brother's shadow. This is big news for an already big recruiting class, which should help pull in even more as Day and Co. try to continue their success on the field.
