Special Teams – Confidence Level 10

Although Ohio State’s special team seemed a little out of sorts against Indiana on kickoffs and in punt coverage, Buckeye kicker Jayden Fielding looked solid going three for three in field goal attempts with a long of 40 yards.

Having confidence in a kicker for late-game situations is going to be important for this team, especially after seeing how last season ended against Georgia. It will be interesting to see if Day will allow Fielding to attempt a 45-yarder or longer at some point in the coming weeks in preparation for a bigger situation later in the season.

As for kickoff and punt coverage, the Buckeyes need some work. Jaylin Lucas almost broke one on two occasions, and if not for Fielding and punter Jesse Mirco Indiana would have hit paydirt thanks to broken special teams play. It is good to know, however, that if needed, both guys who use their legs aren’t afraid to tackle.

I don’t know that Ohio State will face a more dangerous returner this season. Lucas is known for being special when it comes to special teams. Now that that is out of the way, expect Ohio State’s special teams’ play to look much better moving forward.
