Trey Sermon’s major strength is the fire he always brings to the field. He is 6’0″ and weighs 216 pounds, but still leans towards the style of a power back.

More from Ohio State Football

He is a player who runs angry, and that effort and hustle is something that will make him a fan favorite in the Horseshoe. Another strength of his game is his patience in the backfield. Sermon is someone who will let the play develop before attacking the hole.

One of the weaknesses of his game is his lack of versatility. While Sermon is an elite runner, he hasn’t been nearly as effective in the passing game.

During his three years at Oklahoma, he only caught 36 passes and scored on three. This could be a result of Oklahoma’s offense being oriented to a run and gun air-raid style attack.

However, this will be an aspect of his game that Sermon will have to improve upon to show he is a complete back.

What he brings to the team

Sermon is a veteran RB who can fill the void left by J.K. Dobbins departing and the injury to Master Teague. With his addition, the running back unit went from one of the weakest on the roster without a certain starter to one of the stronger positions on the entire team.

Having elite running backs have been a staple of the Ohio State football program in recent history, and it’s a good possibility Sermon will be another excellent back. And possibly will be the missing puzzle piece to yet another Ohio State championship run.
