Ohio State Football: Top 3 Buckeyes in the NFL
By Ian O’Brien
No. 2 Ezekiel Elliott
The Cowboys were trying to find their next franchise running back after losing Demarco Murray to the Eagles. With the fourth pick of the 2016 draft, the Cowboys selected Ezekiel Elliott.
At Ohio State, Elliott rushed for 3,699 yards from 2014 through 2015 and was the big reason for the Buckeyes championship run. Elliott ranks third on the Ohio State career rushing list.
The two in front of him are J.K. Dobbins and Archie Griffin. His biggest moment was the run against the Alabama Crimson Tide, in which the Buckeyes shocked the world by winning 42-35.
Since being drafted by the Cowboys, it’s been nothing but success for Elliott. He’s been the NFL’s rushing leader two times (2016, 2018), and was second in 2019.
Elliott has 5,405 yards and 40 touchdowns during his four years with Dallas and is a three-time pro bowler (2016, 2018, 2019).
Now, there is a concern heading into 2020. That is with new head coach Mike McCarthy.
The reason, he was more of a quarterback guy in Green Bay. However, McCarthy has had a year off and possibly has learned what plays work best for the Cowboys.
Dak Prescott is a fine quarterback, but this time McCarthy will want to use the running game more with Zeke in the backfield than he did with the Packers when he had Aaron Rogers at QB.
Look for Elliott to not only be in the top five in rushing next season, but once again lead the NFL. That would be great, but he also wants something more. He is hungry for a Super Bowl.
