Ohio State Recruiting: Why did this linebacker decommit?
How are things being said about Urban Meyer’s situation by commentators, and possibly coaches from other football programs, affecting Ohio State recruiting?
It has been reported four-star linebacker Kane Patterson has decommitted from the 2019 Ohio State recruiting class. He is the first player to do so but will others follow suit? And how much is the investigation which resulted in a three game suspension for Urban Meyer affecting Ohio State recruiting?
Losing a top 10 linebacker like Patterson from the recruiting class certainly isn’t a good thing but the Buckeyes will be fine at the position. Cade Stover is still on board and either Steele Chambers and / or Craig Young are projected by many to play linebacker.
But the fact Patterson left the class after it was known Urban Meyer would return as the Buckeye head coach following the TCU game is interesting to say the least. I can think of two things that could possibly have affected his decision.
If you own a TV, radio or have access to the internet you probably know many commentators have lambasted the Ohio State University for retaining Urban Meyer as head coach.
Also, quite a few of them had things to say about how Urban handled himself during the press conference following the announcement of the university’s decision. And some even got personal with their opinions of the Buckeye head coach.

Then there is negative recruiting. Everyone who has followed college football for any amount of time knows many coaches use this style of recruiting.
It was widely speculated it was used against Ohio State during the last recruiting cycle. That was primarily due to the possibility assistant coaches might be moving on and defensive line coach Larry Johnson could be considering retirement.
Can you only imagine what coaches who can’t just sell the merits of their own football program are saying about Ohio State and Urban Meyer now?
It’s hard to say how these things will affect the Ohio State recruiting class once the Buckeyes start winning football games. If Ohio State is still in the hunt for a national title late in the season, the noise made by coaches and the media may not affect recruiting much at all.
