On The Field

Miller fits the updated recruiting profile for quarterbacks who have been targeted by second year coach Ryan Day. Meyer’s offense has often utilized run-first quarterbacks like Braxton Miller and JT Barrett. Day however has bypassed “dual-threat” QBs for “pro-style” passers like Mathis and MIller.

But don’t be fooled by the labels. Miller is the number 3 pro-style passer in his class, but sat at the top of OSU’s board for a reason. Meyer may look to throw more going forward, but he will never abandon the read option — a system Miller runs to perfection at his high school.

More from Ohio State Football Recruiting

Miller’s high school offensive coordinator Tim Kohner compared Miller to Philadelphia Eagles QB Carson Wentz, telling Elevenwarriors.com that Miller is “more of a pocket passer, throw the ball first than a guy who is going to just scramble around. Unless it’s a designed run play, which obviously Jack excels at.” He added, “I think he’ll be a great fit for Urban Meyer and his offense.”

Mathis, too, is labeled a pro-style quarterback, but has more than enough mobility to pose the running threat Meyer’s offense is based on.

Both Mathis and Miller are strong-armed, accurate passers with the athletic ability to gain yards in the quarterback run game. Their commitments signal a commitment to pushing the ball downfield more efficiently, without abandoning the numbers advantage Meyer loves to exploit with a running QB.

On The Trail

Fans should be excited about what Miller brings to Ohio State, and not just because of his own talents.

“I’m going to be busy recruiting the best players in the country to come join Jake, Lejond, Paris and myself,” he wrote in his Letterman Row essay. “We will have the best recruiting class in the nation and we’re going to work nonstop to make Buckeye nation proud of who we are on the field and off.”
