Very little time for these quarterbacks to make their case.

Two Ohio State quarterbacks are entering a crucial time where the events the next couple of weeks could go a long way in determining how their college careers play out. I’m talking about Joe Burrow and Dwayne Haskins.

Because of a situation they have no control over, Burrow and Haskins won’t get the reps they would like to have to prove they should be the backup for Ohio State. In scrimmages during spring practices and in the spring game, J.T. Barrett will get more reps than he normally would. He has to get acclimated with what offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson wants him to do with the changes he will be making.

The two backups are getting plenty of reps throwing to receivers and tight ends during drills which is very important. But like J.T. Barrett said when discussing Tate Martell at the beginning of the spring practices, wait until you have Sam Hubbard and Jalyn Holmes coming at you.

Barrett is a seasoned veteran so he knows you can look really good in drills, but what makes the biggest impression is what you do with a 6’5, 270 pound lineman barreling in at you off the edge. That will be the difference whether Burrow or Haskins will be the backup going into fall camp.

Burrow has the advantage there because he played exceptionally well last season, even if was only in mop up duty. In fact, the only reason there is a conversation as to who will be the backup is because Haskins performed so well in last year’s bowl practices.

Their performances in whatever reps the two quarterbacks get during the scrimmages, as well as in the Ohio State Spring game, will determine who will be the backup heading into fall practices. And there won’t be a ton of them. It’s a shame the two quarterbacks won’t have more time to make their case because….

I have a strong feeling the loser of that battle will head elsewhere to play the remainder of their college ball. Lets face it, that guy would spend most of the rest of his time at Ohio State on the bench if he stayed. But he would have plenty of suitors if he decided to leave, and either way he would sit out next season anyway.
