It's never ideal to lose a recruiting battle. That's especially true when it's a five-star recruit that is lost to a conference rival. That's exactly what happened with the Ohio State football program on Friday afternoon when Monshun Sales decided to commit to Indiana.
Sales had once been predicted to pick the Buckeyes, which would have given them two five-star recruits in the class. Instead, the Indianapolis native decided to stay in the state of Indiana. Ryan Day and his staff certainly wanted to land Sales, as he is a very talented receiver.
However, it is not all bad news that Sales spurned the Ohio State Buckeyes. In fact, there is a silver lining to his deciding that he wants to play for the Hoosiers. That silver lining could help them land another five-star recruit in the 2027 recruiting class that they want more.
Ohio State losing out on Monshun Sales could mean they get David Gabriel Georges
Losing Sales was certainly a bummer, but it could actually benefit Ohio State in their pursuit of David Gabriel Georges. Gabriel Georges is the running back recruit they have been desperate to get. He is rated as the second-best running back recruit in the country.
At this point, it has become a battle between the Buckeyes and the Tennessee Volunteers for his services. Losing out on Sales means that the program has more NIL that they could funnel towards Gabriel Georges, meaning they would have a better shot at landing him.
As it stands now, the Vols are prepared to offer him much more money than the Buckeyes. However, that could change now that Ohio State knows they won't be bringing in Sales. Of course, they could still flip him by the time Signing Day rolls around, but that seems unlikely at this point.
Ohio State should feel confident about landing David Gabriel Georges
The Buckeyes feel confident about their ability to land DGG. Even if the NIL money they are offering isn't as much as what Tennessee is giving him, they feel that their ability to prepare him for the next level stands alone. The ability to win a national championship or two also helps them in this scenario.
Ohio State will learn whether or not they will actually get a commitment from him next week. At this point, they feel extremely confident that they will be the school that he picks. Losing out on Sales could give them the opportunity to up the NIL offer, which could be the final bit they need to get DGG.
Landing Gabriel Georges would give Ohio State yet another five-star recruit in the 2027 class. That would be the fourth one they've gotten a commitment from. Of course, nothing matters until the day that they all sign their paperwork in early December.
Until then, the Buckeyes and the coaching staff still need to recruit the players every single day. That will help them forge the relationships that they need in order to solidify their commitment.
