Ohio State great Justin Fields is with a new team, the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs traded a sixth-round draft pick to the New York Jets for Fields. This will make it Fields' fourth franchise in what will be his sixth season this fall. It's the best spot Fields will have been in since he came into the NFL. He won't be asked to revive a franchise that has a culture of losing like the Chicago Bears and New York Jets did. He won't be asked to compete with a legend for the starting job, and not know his status from week to week like when he was with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Fields will be Patrick Mahomes backup.
With the injury Mahomes sustained late last season, Fields will be getting a boatload of first-team reps with the Chiefs' dynamic offense. He likely will even get a handful of games to start while Mahomes continues to heal. Fields will have the chance to learn from some of the best. He'll be able to learn from the best quarterback in the NFL, one of the best coaches ever, and in an all-time dynamic offensive system.
Andy Reid has been a head coach in the NFL for nearly three decades. Reid has coached such greats as Mahomes, Donovan McNabb, and Alex Smith. But there is another great that Reid coached that should grab the attention of Fields and his fans. That great is Michael Vick.
Vick was a quarterback who was very athletic with his legs, and everyone thought his best days were behind him. Vick didn't win any Super Bowls with Philly or Reid, but he set career highs in completion percentage, passing yards, touchdown passes, and quarterback rating.
Fields not only needs to take in everything he can from Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes, but he also needs to be willing to work outside the box. Once Mahomes comes back, be willing to do every gadget formation and trick play in the book.
There are even players whom Reid is familiar with that have shown the blueprint for this kind of athlete to contribute to an offense. While that may be a story in and of itself, the point is that Justin Fields has another chance at success.
