The USC Trojans are officially a flip threat to 2029 Bellflower (CA) receiver Austin Miller, who shockingly committed to the Ohio State Buckeyes on Monday. It was shocking mainly because there are two other cycles before 2029 that Cortez Hankton could give attention to, mainly, the 2027 class. 5-star Big Walnut WR Jamier Brown is the only commit in the class at the position so far.
The Athletic's Cameron Teague Robinson relayed USC's potential poach plan of the LA County native and rising high school sophomore between now and 2029; by which point Miller will have gone through a pretty notable period of transformation for most human beings.
As Teague Robinson noted, Miller will have officially been named a 5-star recruit at that point. That will almost assuredly transform what his recruitment will look like.
"While most recruiting sites don’t have rankings for the 2029 class just yet, Miller will likely be a five-star receiver when they do begin. The Bellflower, Calif., star had a stellar freshman season, tallying 35 catches for 609 yards and eight touchdowns, with 883 rushing yards and 13 more touchdowns on the ground. There’s a long way to go before Miller signs in two years, so expect the California schools, especially USC, to get involved in this one, but this is a big start for new receivers coach Cortez Hankton," Teague Robinson wrote.
Cleveland.com's Andrew Gillis relayed that Miller could be the No. 1 overall receiver in the class. Depending on how the class shakes out at other positions, he may be the No. 1 overall player in the cycle.
Quite frankly, he better be. While Hankton is in his first offseason and has built-in leeway, it was somewhat of a frustrating headline for some to see attention dedicated to something so intangible as a 2029 recruit.
Worse yet, one whose potential future flip you may already be able to see the Hollywood script coming together for.
Austin Miller may already be setting up a USC flip
What's with these California kids using the Buckeyes for their hometown flip announcements? It feels like we're reading the same script as we speak, with 4-star Huntington Beach quarterback commit (for now, at least) Brady Edmunds and the UCLA Bruins. Edmunds made it obvious his commitment to OSU meant nothing, though he seems to be backtracking on that.
It may just take a significant UCLA regular-season win for Edmunds to finally unleash his flip announcement this coming fall, though. Who could pass up being part of that kind of hoopla? Especially since he'll be right there on the West Coast.
Even with recent claims, Edmunds has admitted that this is a business decision for him. As it should be for every athlete, since earnings are not guaranteed in this violent sport, but every business needs good marketing. What better marketing could you have for your homecoming than using the Ohio State University as a stepping stone to announce it?
Let's hope Miller isn't planning on using the Buckeyes as leverage to maximize his payday with the Trojans. Let's hope I'm just being overly skeptical about Miller and Edmunds' statuses.
If both are West Coast-bound, or rather, West Coast-minded and having never seriously considered Central Ohio (there's that skepticism again), then many Buckeyes fans were simply sold the Hollywood Sign.
