Some Ohio State football fans are starting to get a little antsy about how the Buckeyes are doing on the recruiting trail. It's understandable, considering the fact that they only have 13 commitments in the 2027 recruiting class up to this point. It's a little surprising they haven't been able to get more yet.
Of course, the Ohio State Buckeyes will end up with more than that once December rolls around. One area that fans should be pleased with on the recruiting front is the offensive line. Tyler Bowen has brought in five offensive linemen already, replenishing some depth.
While Bowen has yet to land a five-star recruit since he was hired to be the offensive line coach, he has done a great job picking up quality linemen. In fact, Bowen's work has gotten easier to appreciate after the latest update to the major recruiting systems.
Four of Ohio State five OL recruits are now 4-star recruits
After the latest composite update, four out of the five offensive linemen who have pledged commitments to Ohio State are now four-star recruits. That includes Kellen Wymer, who is just outside of five-star territory. He is the 44th-best overall recruit in the country.
If Bowen is going to be able to build offensive lines that have really good players, that's going to be a great sign for the future. Even though he hasn't hit an elite one yet, he's banking on his ability to develop offensive linemen into elite players. That will be tested this season.
Four starters up front return. Only Tegra Tshabola is gone, and he was the worst offensive lineman on the roster. With all of that talent now, Bowen is going to be under a lot of pressure to have the unit play much better this year. The offensive line was the worst unit on the team a year ago.
Ohio State is unlikely to take another offensive lineman in this recruiting class
It would be surprising to see Ryan Day take another offensive lineman in this class. Five is already a lot in one class, so Bowen likely won't accept any more commitments. The only reason they would take another one is if they added a five-star recruit, and they don't really have a shot at landing one of those.
After a class this strong, that's fine. Sam Greer comes in as a freshman this year as well, so they have some really good offensive linemen in the pipeline. It's time for Bowen to do some developing instead of just recruiting. He's known as more of a recruiter, but he needs to take another step in his coaching career.
Over the rest of this month, Ohio State should be able to add at least a handful of recruits. They continue to have several official visits scheduled over the course of the next month. With that being the case, it would be surprising if they were not able to get some commitments by the time the calendar flips to July.
