By Ryan Stano
Saturday afternoon was another nightmare day for the Ohio State football program against TTUN. For the fourth straight year, they lost The game. This time, it was by a score of 13-10. Ohio State failed to score in the second half for the first time this season.
For the Ohio State Buckeyes, it's more of the same in a game against Michigan. This is the standard under Ryan Day. He has proven that he can't beat TTUN. This loss drops his record to 1-4 in The Game. The only win he has in this game is the win in 2019 with Urban Meyer's players.
Since that first game, it's all been downhill for the Buckeyes under Day in this game. Looking at his resume, Day has just two Big Ten titles and zero national championships. He has the same number of wins over Michigan as Curt Cignetti and Jedd Fisch. Quite frankly, that's embarassing.
It's clear that Day should no longer be leading the Ohio State Buckeyes. He can't win big games and he certainly can't beat Michigan. With the number of talented players the Buckeyes have on the roster, that's simply not acceptable. He needs to go.
With that in mind, there are three coaches that the Buckeyes should target to replace Ryan Day. All of these guys are coaches who understand the rivalry and know what it means to be a Buckeye. The first of these coaches is the guy they should try to target first.
1. Mike Vrabel
Mike Vrabel should be the top target for the Ohio State football program. After being fired by the Tennessee Titans for reasons that still remain unclear, Vrabel inexplicably did not get any NFL head coaching jobs at the start of the season. He has been working as an analyst for the Browns.
Vrabel makes so much sense for this job. Not only is he a former player, but he also coached at Ohio State under Urban Meyer. If anyone understands how to beat TTUN, it's someone like him. He has also proven that he can turn a program around. Vrabel won the NFL Coach of the Year in 2021.
Because Vrabel doesn't currently have another head coaching job, he should be the top target for Ross Bjork. He hasn't been enthused about recruiting in the past, but he could earn more money coaching the Buckeyes than he could as an NFL head coach.
Vrabel is a no-nonsense kind of coach. He will hold the guys accountable every step of the way, just as he did in Tennessee. He's certainly someone that the alumni and NIL donors can rally around as well. Vrable wouldn't be cheap, but he's someone the Buckeyes should call.
The second coach on this list is someone else who played for the Buckeyes on the defensive side of the ball.
