Three bold predictions for Ohio State football vs. Oregon
By Ryan Stano
This weekend is going to have a lot of really good college football games. Texas/Oklahoma, Ole Miss/LSU, and Penn State/USC are all on Saturday. It all gets capped off with the Ohio State football team taking on Oregon in Eugene for a battle of top-five teams.
These are the kinds of games that you come to Ohio State to play. Well, at least most guys do. This is a massive game with Big Ten and College Football Playoff implications. #2 vs. #3 means that the winner of this game has a shot to be the new number-one team once the new polls come out.
For Ohio State, this game is about getting revenge for what happened back in 2021 in Columbus. The Ducks came in and beat the Buckeyes in the second game of the season. There are a lot of guys on this team who were on the field that day. They haven't forgotten that result.
In order to win this game, it's going to take everything these two teams have. The best players on the field have to play their best and elevate everyone else around them. The competition on the other side is too good to just play an average game and expect to come out on top.
Without further ado, we have three bold predictions for you in this game. The first of the bold predictions has to do with the Ohio State passing game, specifically a receiver.
1. Jeremiah Smith will catch two touchdown passes for the Ohio State football team
With so many weapons on offense. It's hard for the Ohio State Buckeyes to get everyone the ball sometimes. So many guys can take the ball to the end zone at any moment. One of those guys is true freshman wide receiver Jeremiah Smith. He just can't stop making ridiculous plays.
Over the past two weeks, Smith has made three one-handed catches. He's just too good for anyone to cover one-on-one. The issue is that the Ducks might have to do just that. Emeka Egbuka caught three touchdowns last week against Iowa and had one two weeks ago against Michigan State.
Which guy do you single-cover in man-to-man? The guy who is a senior and could end up being a first-round pick in next April's NFL Draft? Or the guy who is playing his sixth collegiate game and might already be the best player on the Ohio State football team?
It's a tough choice. I have a feeling that whatever Oregon does will be wrong. That's why I expect them to play a lot of zone coverage. When they do play man, they will press up and send pressure at Will Howard. That's when I think Smith will shine. Expect him to have at least two touchdown catches in this one.
The next bold prediction for this game has to do with what the defense of Ohio State will do against Oregon.
