The Ohio State football program has been searching for some momentum on the recruiting trail in the month of June. They stalled out in terms of getting commitments, only getting one in a four-week period. It has been a struggle to develop some momentum.
A few days ago, the Buckeyes landed their first cornerback of the 2027 recruiting class. Tim Walton was the one who helped start the momentum for Ohio State on the recruiting front. Until Wednesday, they had only 14 commits for this recruiting class. On Wednesday, that changed for the better.
Jaden Carey is a four-star cornerback recruit who had been predicted to pick the Buckeyes a while ago. He set a commitment date for Wednesday and was choosing between Ohio State, Miami, and Auburn. Carey picked the Ohio State Buckeyes, giving them their second cornerback of the class.
Four-star cornerback recruit Jaden Carey commits to Ohio State
Carey has decided to play for the Buckeyes for the next three to four years. He is barely a four-star prospect, so it's unlikely that he will see much playing time early in his career. Even so, Carey adds some depth at a position that they need to replace yearly.
Walton has proven that he can recruit well. He landed the number-one cornerback in the country a year ago in Devin Sanchez. Sanchez is now expected to have a large role in the defense this season, and might even compete for one of the outside starting spots.
Now, Walton has landed two cornerbacks in this class. Landing a third isn't out of the question. Walton also did a good job in the Transfer Portal, bringing in three guys who should be able to help this season at the cornerback spot. Walton was clearly a strong hire by Ryan Day.
Ohio State's recruiting class is slowly getting better
With now the 15th commit for the 2027 recruiting class, Ohio State is starting to slowly creep up the recruiting rankings. Ohio State currently has the 9th-best recruiting class in the country. If the class were to sign today, that would be by far the worst ranking in modern times for the Buckeyes.
Auburn, Oregon, and Texas Tech all have better recruiting classes than them at the moment. While this ranking is far too low, the Bucks sat 13th just a few days ago. After adding the two cornerbacks, they are starting to finally get back to where they should be.
It looks like they are about to land a couple of five-star recruits, as well. David Gabriel Georges is all but locked up in this class. The same can be said for Marcus Fakatou. Adding both five-star recruits would vault this class into the top five in the country.
The Buckeyes are going to keep adding solid recruits in the next few months. It would be shocking if they didn't have close to 20 recruits committed by the time the month ends. Ohio State should end up with a solid class by the time December rolls around.
