The Ohio State football team falls in the polls
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team had an opportunity to make a statement on Saturday night. Had they been able to beat Oregon, they had a chance to become the new number-one team in the country. Instead, the Buckeyes fell 32-31 to the Ducks after some awful defense.
While this loss won't end their season in any way, it certainly will make it harder for them to win the Big Ten. That's the only way to guarantee a spot in the new 12-team College Football Playoff. Unfortunately, falling to the Ducks makes that much tougher. They can still get an at-large bid though.
As far as the polls are concerned, the Ohio State Buckeyes weren't expected to fall that far. Losing to the #3 team in the country on the road by one point shouldn't kill them. It didn't. The new polls have been released and Ohio State hardly fell at all after this loss.
The Ohio State football team falls to fourth in the polls
Ohio State fell to #4. in the polls. They fall just two spots. Texas stayed at one and Oregon moved up to second. Penn State jumped up to third and the Buckeyes are just behind them. If that holds, Ohio State will have to play another top-five matchup in a few weeks.
Obviously, this loss didn't end Ohio State's season. It did show that they have a lot to fix if they want to win a national championship this year. That was the goal of this team coming in. It will take major fixes on the defensive side of the ball. Offensively, they have some things to work out too.
The team we saw on Saturday definitely can't win a national title. That doesn't mean they can't still become that team in the next few weeks.
