The Ohio State football program has addressed some needs in the transfer portal but still has two huge needs to fill.

The Ohio State football program has used the transfer portal very effectively over the years. They have grabbed starting quarterbacks, safeties, offensive linemen, and more. This year, they started slowly in the portal, not landing any prospects for a while. That changed very quickly.

Over the course of Monday and Tuesday, the Buckeyes were able to sign four players. They now have five total portal commits. Those commits play offensive line, defensive line, tight end, and running back. All of those are dire positions of need heading into 20205.

Even with all of the good players the Buckeyes have been able to get from the portal so far, they still have two major needs that they have to get sorted. Before next season starts, the Ohio State Buckeyes must get a new kicker and a new punter.

The Ohio State football team needs a new kicker and punter from the transfer portal

Jayden Fielding has been a big problem for this Ohio State team this season. He has missed three of his last four kicks, including two under 40 yards against Michigan. The Buckeyes need to get a more reliable kicker in the portal next season, one with a stronger leg preferably.

Punting has also been a big issue for this team. They have had Joe McGuire punt most of the season. His numbers aren't that great. He averages just 42 yards per punt and has just one downed inside the 20-yard line. Against Tennessee, his three punts averaged just 39.2 yards.

Those big players on special teams remain the largest needs for this Ohio State football team heading into next season. They still have a chance to get one of each before the portal closes for the Spring. If they don't see one they like, they can wait for the Spring. At that time, all of the good ones might be gone.

Expect the Buckeyes to be active on that front in the next week or so.
