Ohio State was disappointed when David Gabriel Georges picked Tennessee over the Buckeyes. He was the top running back on their board for the 2027 recruiting class. However, the Vols massively overpaid Gabriel Georges, and it was smart of them to let him go.
The Ohio State Buckeyes still have DJ Jacobs as part of their 2027 class. He is the best edge guy in the class. Miami has tried to flip him, to no avail. The Volunteers are now setting up their fans for disappointment, as they are trying to flip Jacobs from the Buckeyes as well.
Tennesee will likely fail in its pursuit to flip DJ Jacobs from Ohio State
According to Steve Wiltfong of Rivals, how well the Volunteers do on the field this year will play a big part in their efforts to flip Jacobs.
"They're shooting their shot with DJ Jacobs. Jacobs' father played for Coach (Rodney) Garner at Georgia. He's like a second father to him...We know the Buckeyes, their track record, what they do for their players. They didn't land this commitment by accident. They check a lot of boxes. Tennessee's performance on the field this year is pivotal as they make a push to flip David DJ Jacobs."
Wiltfong mentioned that Jacobs will be in Columbus several more times throughout the season, so that likely means that he will stay committed. While Wiltfong says that Jacobs hasn't shut the door on other programs, it seems like the Volunteers are grasping at straws.
Jacobs has started to recruit other players to the Buckeyes over the last few months, so it wouldn't make sense for him to flip to Tennessee at this point. He would be a perfect fit for Larry Johnson's system up front, which is part of the reason why he committed to the Buckeyes in the first place.
Ohio State will need to keep recruiting DJ Jacobs into the Fall
As with all of their recruits in the 2027 class, the Buckeyes will have to keep recruiting them. Other programs will keep trying to flip their best guys, including Jacobs. Of course, Ohio State has done a good job of paying its top guys in the class a solid amount to keep them enticed.
However, the Buckeyes will not overpay for guys. We saw that with DGG, so Ohio State has a set number they are willing to pay their guys. Still, it is highly unlikely that Jacobs is going anywhere. Tennessee is trying to manufacture hype that they can flip him.
Ohio State currently has the seventh-best recruiting class in the country. They likely won't be doing much to add to that total before December, but they will end up using the Transfer Portal a lot more in January than they have in past years. Losing a lot of older talent will force their hand.
Jacobs will have several programs trying to throw a bag to him over the next few months. Ohio State feels extremely confident in its ability to keep him.
