Ryan Day's job security wavers has he stacks up another big-game loss
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team lost a big game when they were the favorite. Sound familiar? That's what happened again on Saturday night after the Buckeyes fell 32-31 to Oregon. Despite being in field goal range, the Buckeyes decided to throw the ball, resulting in an offensive pass interference, and that pushed them out of field goal range.
Will Howard then didn't slide down fast enough for them to get a field goal attempt up. The Ohio State Buckeyes lost the game with a timeout in their pocket. Things like that come down to coaching. It's yet another example of Ryan Day failing to come up big when it matters the most.
Think about the big games that Day has won since taking over as head coach in 2019. How many big wins does he have? The Clemson games in 2019 and 2020 (both with Urban Meyer's players), The Gme in 2019, the two Notre Dame games in 2022 and 2023, and...? What else is there?
Ryan Day continues to stack up big game losses for the Ohio State football team
Now look at how many big games the Ohio State Buckeyes have lost under Day. They lost in the National Championship Game to Alabama in 2020, fell to Georgia in the CFP in 2022, and they've lost three straight to Michigan. Day has now lost a pair of games against Oregon as well.
That's a lot of losses stacking up in front of Day. His job security is certainly wavering, especially if he loses to Michigan again this year. This Michigan team is terrible. At least this Oregon team is pretty good. With the new 12-team Playoff, this loss won't kill the Buckeyes.
Another loss will, though. Day better win all of the rest of his games this season. There's a new athletic director in town who didn't hire him. He's out of security blankets.
