Expectations are very high every year for the Ohio State football program. Players and coaches feel the pressure in every game they play. Losing games while playing for the Buckeyes is not acceptable. Only winning championships is something fans will be happy with.
Ryan Day knows that better than anyone. After losing The Game in 2024, fans were calling for him to be fired, including me. He was able to turn things around and win the national championship a couple of months later. Now, fans love him. That's how quickly things can change with the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Because of that dynamic, Day only recruits certain kinds of players to play in Columbus. He knows what it takes to win in the pressure cooker that he coaches in. He recently had some harsh honesty for recruits when it comes to players he might look at.
Ohio State head coach Ryan Day gives recruits brutal honesty
While speaking with Chris Low of On3, Day explained that playing for Ohio State is not for everyone.
“...it’s not for everybody, coaches and players. And if you don’t like it, there are a lot of other places to go. But we embrace those expectations and are going to do everything we can to meet them.”
Only the best of the best can play for the Buckeyes. He wants players who are not going to run from competition and who are willing to put in the work to be better. If a recruit is just looking to get paid a bunch of NIL money and coast, Columbus is not the right place for them.
The Buckeyes have made it very clear that they will not overpay for high school recruits, no matter how good they are. It does seem they are offering DJ Jacobs a healthy amount, so they are flexible in that regard. Still, that's only for certain recruits who have a certain playing style and mentality.
