Ohio State had the worst possible thing happen in the Buckeyes' win over Indiana. Julian Sayin was knocked out in the fourth quarter and did not come back. He emerged from the locker room with a sling on his throwing arm. Luke Fahey had to finish the game.
Right after the game, Ryan Day didn't have an update on the quarterback's condition. He needed to head into the locker room for more information. The Buckeyes now have more clarity, and the news is as bad as it could be for a team competing for a national title.
Ryan Day gives horrible Julian Sayin update for Ohio State football fans
In his post-game press conference, Ryan Day confirmed that Julian Sayin will be out for "several weeks.' That's the worst-possible scenario for the Buckeyes, as they are in the hardest part of their schedule. They have a bye week next week, but then they have to play USC and Oregon in back-to-back weeks.

With Sayin out, it seems that Fahey will likely end up being the starter. He has been ahead of Tavien St. Clair on the depth chart all season long, so it looks like the true freshman will hold the Buckeyes' championship hopes on his right shoulder. He has to figure out how to move the ball.
Having Jeremiah Smith to throw the ball to helps, but that doesn't make fans any more secure with Sayin out. Sayin played his worst game as a Buckeye against the Hoosiers, but he's still by far the best option at quarterback the team has. The offense could have an issue moving the ball now.
This also means that the Ohio State Buckeyes are going to have to run the ball a lot better moving forward. Against IU, the Buckeyes ran it for just 78 yards on 37 carries. That was only good enough for 2.1 yards per carry, which is repulsive. Ohio State has to be better with a backup QB in charge.
Ohio State will have to change its offense for the rest of the year
With a new quarterback behind center, the Buckeyes are going to have to change their offense. They will not be able to just chuck it down the field as often, even if Smith is open. Smith is still the best player in college football, but getting the ball to him is a challenge.
Smith's Heisman chances will also likely take a hit. If he doesn't get the ball as often, it's going to be hard for him to put up the numbers necessary to win the trophy. Of course, Smith would like to win a national championship more than the Heisman. He's a team guy first and foremost.
Winning a title is still very much in play. Ohio State showed that the defense has improved to the point that it can lean on that unit to win games. That's what the Buckeyes are going to have to do with Fahey. Ohio State is not going to have the same explosive offense with Sayin sidelined.
