When the Transfer Portal first opened, the Ohio State football team saw a rash of players leave. It was by far the most players who have left the Buckeyes since the portal became a widely used phenomenon. Ryan Day and his staff didn't make many moves to fill those holes, either.
Fans of the Ohio State Buckeyes were pleading with Day to get some of the best players on the market, who had entered the portal early. Instead, Day and his staff decided to bide their time and wait until they got the kind of players that they were targeting the entire time.
In the last week, the Buckeyes have filled most of their needs with the portal. They have added a kicker, depth on the defensive line, and a couple of receivers. They also added a running back to help replenish a room that was desperately thin. It looks like Day did exactly what he needed to do.
The Ohio State football program replenished the roster with depth
After starting the season 12-0, the Buckeyes crashed and burned in the final two games of the season. Day wants to make sure that doesn't happen again. In order to do that, the Buckeyes have added players with experience and some with a high level of potential.
Could they have gotten some more players? Yes. A new punter would have been nice. Adding an elite offensive lineman would have helped. Day still has time to add some players to the roster. But overall, Day did a much better job with the portal than most Ohio State fans thought he would.
Now, it's up to Day to hire the right offensive coordinator to put his new players on that side of the ball in the best possible situation to succeed. The rumor is that he's waiting for an NFL guy, and there are a few who could be a big hit. That's the next thing on Day's agenda that fans are waiting on.
Ohio State now has the third-best class when including the recruits and the Transfer Portal players.
