Ranking which CFP teams pose the biggest threat to the Ohio State football team
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team is one of the best teams in the country. According to the College Football Playoff Selection Committee, they are the second-best team. The Buckeyes are actually the betting favorites to win the national championship, according to every major sportsbook.
Just because the Buckeyes are the betting favorites doesn't mean that they are a lock to win it all. Last week's win over Penn State gives them confidence that they can be a national championship contender again. Still, they have some teams who can prevent them from reaching their ultimate goal.
There are a few teams near the top of the CFP rankings that can keep the Ohio State Buckeyes from winning the national championship. We'll rank the top three teams who will be a thorn in Ohio State's side from now until the end of the national championship in terms of the biggest threat.
The three biggest CFP teams who threaten the Ohio State football team
The first threat we'll talk about is #8 Indiana. IU has been a nice story. They have been killing everyone that they have played so far. Their offense looks like a well-oiled machine. Defensively, they allow the seventh-fewest total points in the country. That all could be a product of their soft schedule though.
Ohio State is more talented than IU. The Hoosiers come to the Shoe in a few weeks, so we'll get to see just how good they are. I tend to think this is where the nice story will end for the Hoosiers. Ohio State should be able to beat them and keep their march toward the Big Ten Championship.
Secondly, fourth-ranked Miami is concerning. Cam Ward just creates things out of thin air and somehow keeps winning the Hurricanes these crazy games. I don't think Miami is a great team by any means, but Ohio State struggles with dual-threat quarterbacks. The defense could struggle if they met them in a CFP game.
The number-one threat to the Ohio State football team winning a national championship is Oregon. Ohio State already lost to the Ducks in a game they could have won. Oregon shredded Ohio State's defense and kind of put them through an identity crisis on that side of the ball.
If the Buckeyes win out, they will face Oregon in a rematch. If the Buckeyes lose that game, they still get into the CFP but they would have a much harder route to the national championship. There's also a chance they could take on Oregon a third time, and the Ducks are just really good.
Ohio State still has the talent to beat anyone in the country. They just need to build off the momentum they got from beating the Nittany Lions.
