No big surprise for the Ohio State football team's ranking first CFP rankings
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team has one of the best wins in the country. They went on the road last week and took down a top-five Penn State team. Winning that game 20-13 is only bettered by one other team's resume. That team is Oregon, who beat the Buckeyes by one point.
Ohio State's only loss is to undefeated Oregon. It was, by one point, on the road to the number-one team in the country. No one else has such a resume. That point was highlighted by the College Football Playoff Committee on Tuesday night when they released their first rankings of the year.
The seeding works differently than the rankings in this year's rankings. Because it's a 12-team Playoff, there are four automatic bids for the CFP. Those go to the four highest-ranked conference champions. Right now, Ohio State would not be in that group. Still, they are ranked second in the CFP rankings.

Oregon and Ohio State are the top two teams in the country, according to the Committee. Georgia, Miami, and Texas. That's not how the top-four seeds would be in the Playoff. It would be Oregon, Georgia, Miami, and BYU getting the first-round byes in this scenario.
Right now, the Ohio State Buckeyes would be taking on Boise State in a first-round matchup in the Shoe. They have the Broncos as the 12-seed and the fifth-highest-ranked conference champion. Of course, a lot is still going to change between now and the end of the season.
Ohio State is on a collision course with Oregon in a rematch in the Big Ten Championship Game. The Buckeyes just have to win out in order to make that happen. If they do, they will have a shot to get that top overall seed and get a first-round bye.
This ranking is no surprise. They have the best win in the country and the best loss. It's logical for them to be in that spot.
