What picking Will Howard as the starting QB means for Ohio State football
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team will have a new starting quarterback for the third straight year. Following the departure of Kyle McCord in the offseason, the Buckeyes went into the transfer portal looking for someone with experience who could battle for the starting job.
Will Howard was the guy they settled on. He transferred into the program with one year left of eligibility. It was expected that he was going to be the starting quarterback as soon as he came into the program. Otherwise, why would he have transferred in the first place?
Of course, Howard had to earn the job. He couldn't just show up and automatically get the starting job. There are a lot of talented quarterbacks on the roster and Howard had to show that he is the best of them. He did that, and Ryan Day has officially named him as the starting quarterback for this season.
Will Howard is officially the starting quarterback for the Ohio State football team
So what does this mean for the Ohio State Buckeyes? What will this do for this offense? What it does is give the Buckeyes a quarterback who can tuck it down and run if he needs to. He'll also be used in designed runs. That's what happens when you're the fastest quarterback on the roster.
Besides the dual-threat capability, Howard also has a strong arm. He has the ability to make all of the throws necessary to lead an elite offense. The difference between what he is now and what he was at Kansas State will manifest itself on the field early in the season.
This is by far the most talented team that he's been a part of. The receivers are easily the best he's every played with. He won't have to make more than two reads in order to find someone open. If those first two reads aren't there, he'll just tuck it and run it.
Howard gives this offense the best chance to do great things right now. Ohio State football fans should be happy with this decision from Ryan Day.
