3. C.J. Hicks

Both starting linebackers from a year ago are about to get drafted by NFL teams later this month. That means that some new guys are going to have to step up. C.J. Hicks is a former five-star recruit that will finally get a chance to see steady playing time on defense and do just that.

Hicks is a good talent. He deserves a lot of the hype that he's had over the last couple of years. He's just had a couple of really good players in front of him so he's had to wait his turn. Hicks wants to make 2024 his turn, but he has to fight with another really good talent.

Since it seems like Cody Simon is locked in as one starter, Hicks has to contend with Sonny Styles as he transitions to the linebacker position from his safety spot. Styles is going to get a lot of playing regardless, and Jim Knowles has mentioned that the Buckeyes could run out some three-linebacker sets.

If Hicks has a big game on Saturday, he could earn a starting spot and fend off Styles from taking his snaps instead. Styles would be forced to take some of Simon's snaps instead. Personally, I think that's what would be best for the defense. I think Hicks and Styles are the two most talented guys.

Either way, Hicks could really benefit from a strong game in the Spring Game. He's a great talent and now it's time for him to show it. If he can help stop a really talented offense, that would send the right message to the coaches.
