The Ohio State football team's hidden gem at tight end
By Tyler Lyman
Gee Scott Jr. has really started to shine for the Ohio State football team, especially after his impressive performance against Michigan State. Originally coming in as a highly-ranked wide receiver, Scott stands at 6-foot-3 and weighs about 245 pounds.
He was known for his skills and athleticism in high school but switching to tight end hasn’t been the easiest journey for him. In his first three years with the team, he only had 10 catches for 70 yards and one touchdown. A lot of this was due to the tough competition at the position and the adjustment to a more physical role.
Instead of getting discouraged by his limited playing time, Scott put in the work to improve his blocking and other skills. He became a respected leader on the team, always willing to help his teammates. Now as a fifth-year player, he’s finally getting the chance to make a real impact.
In the recent game against Michigan State, Scott had his best game yet. He caught three passes for 14 yards and scored his first touchdown of the season. While those numbers might not seem huge, his involvement in the offense is a significant step forward.
Cade Stover last year was probably the best tight end in Ohio State history. His receiving ability was very good. It is pretty hard to live up to the expectations that Stover set in his last couple of years. However, Scott’s unique skill set adds versatility to the offense.
He’s not just a blocker; he’s also a dynamic weapon who can create mismatches against defenses, like how Stover would do. His combination of size and athleticism allows him to exploit defensive weaknesses, and his background as a wide receiver gives him an edge in route running. This means he can present a challenge for linebackers and safeties who have to cover him.
Scott is crucial, especially since other tight ends on the team haven’t been playing as well. He has stepped up at the right time, becoming a reliable option for the quarterbacks. Chip Kelly’s offensive strategy focuses on distributing the ball effectively, and having Scott as a weapon helps take some pressure off the bigger stars on the team. It’s clear that Scott is starting to find his place in the offense, and his contributions could be vital as the season progresses.
Beyond just the numbers, Scott’s impact on the team goes deeper. His work ethic and positive attitude have made him a favorite among teammates and coaches alike. He brings energy and leadership that can help uplift the whole team. As he continues to grow into his role, Scott is not only focused on personal success; he wants to help the Buckeyes achieve their goals for the season.
With all these factors it’s exciting to think about what lies ahead for Gee Scott Jr. He’s no longer just a former wide receiver trying to find his way, he’s becoming a key part of the Ohio State Buckeyes' plans. As the season unfolds, fans should keep an eye on him. He’s a rising star ready to make a name for himself. If he keeps building on his recent success, we could see him break out in a big way, helping the Buckeyes chase their national title aspirations.
