The Ohio State football program has stalled a bit on the recruiting trail recently. Now, they might be losing out on a big-time recruit in their own state.

The Ohio State football program hasn't gotten a recruiting commitment for a while. They have lost a guy from the 2025 recruiting class more recently than they have added someone to it. That shouldn't last long, but it's still something to monitor as we continue toward the end of the month of May.

Once camp season starts in June, the Buckeyes will be adding more prospects to the class. But there has been a concerning update regarding one of the best recruits in the state of Ohio. Trey McNutt, who is the best safety in the country and is a five-star recruit, is trending away from the Buckeyes.

One of the things that has made the Ohio State football program special over the past few years has been their ability to keep the best players in the state of Ohio. That doesn't look like that's going to happen with the best safety in the country, which is discouraging.

It sounds like McNutt is leaning away from choosing the Buckeyes. He still hasn't announced a final list of schools, so we don't know who he will ultimately pick. It just seems like the Buckeyes won't be the team that he ends up playing for, although there is still time to change his mind.

Not getting a safety recruit isn't the worst thing in the world. It's actually a position that they have a fair amount of depth at. It's not like it's the offensive line or something like that. It's fine if they end up not getting him, but it would be nice to keep the best kids in the state of Ohio, in Ohio.

Ryan Day still has time to change McNutt's mind. The staff as a whole has a chance to make an impression that is impossible to ignore.
