Ryan Day thought Devin Brown was going to start for the Ohio State football team
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team had a quarterback battle for the third straight season leading up to this year. It was mainly between Will Howard and Devin Brown, although Julian Sayin and Air Noland were fighting for the backup job. It's the second straight year that Brown has been in a battle for the top spot.
On Thursday, Ryan Day announced that Howard had won the starting job. He transferred in from Kansas State in the offseason and was expected to win the job. Still, he had to go out and earn it and he did. Howard was just more consistent and was able to win the locker room over.
Howard was the leader in the clubhouse from the moment he walked on campus. For Brown, this is the second time he's lost a battle for the starting quarterback job. Day did have something interesting to say on that when he was talking about naming Howard the starter.

While speaking to the media about his decision, Day had something very interesting to say about the quarterback competition from 2022.
Day thought that Brown was going to win the job last season. It's clear the Buckeyes responded more to McCord than they did to Brown and that was one of the deciding factors. Perhaps there was a good reason as to why the battle lasted into the regular season.
This might be an indictment on Brown's talent that he has now gotten beaten out for the starting job two years in a row. Next year won't be any easier with Tavien St. Clair coming in and Sayin and Noland in their second year in the program.
There is no controversy this year. This is Howard's team and it will be all season long.
