Ryan Day names Will Howard as the starting QB of the Ohio State football team
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team has been having yet another quarterback competition. This is the third straight season that's been the case. Even after having Will Howard transfer in during the offseason, Ryan Day insisted on having a quarterback competition.
Day has never been a coach that has given anything to anyone. He makes everyone earn their playing time and their starting spot. The same thing was going to happen for Howard. Devin Brown returned this year determined to win the starting job over him and redeem himself after he got hurt in the Cotton Bowl.
In the end, Howard's talent was just too much for Brown and the young QBs on the roster to overcome. On Thursday afternoon, Day officially announced Howard as the starting quarterback for the Ohio State Buckeyes this season. There will be no competition any longer.
Will Howard is the Ohio State football team's starting quarterback
Howard becomes the starter for an Ohio State football team that has national championship aspirations. He knows that he doesn't have to be the hero of this team. He just has to get the ball to his playmakers and get out of the way, and there are plenty of playmakers surrounding him.
This is by far the best group of skill players Howard has ever played with. Day likely made the decision to name him the starter because of his past starting experience. He isn't going to allow a young, unproven quarterback take over a team full of veterans.
I fully expect this to be proven to be the right decision. Howard gives the Buckeyes a dual-threat at quarterback that they haven't had since Justin Fields was the starter. His decision-making is the best of any of the group of quarterbacks right now too.
Howard knows the kind of opportunity that he has in front of him. He's embracing the challenge that lies in front of him and he's ready to lead the Buckeyes to some big wins.
